The Dalmatian did not originate in Dalmatia, an area which lies along the coast of what was once Yugoslavia, currently under the control of Croatia. They may have originated in Rome, but they were most certainly spread across Europe with the Gypsies. During the Middle Ages they came top be associated with the Catholic Church and uniquely spotted dogs have been traced back to early Christian times. Popular in Europe, the breed moved to England where they became coach dogs, traveling for hundreds of miles under the front wheels of a coach and guarding it when the human travelers were eating or resting. They developed a love for horses, living in the stable instead of the mannor house.
